Will Wilkinson: Complementarity and Contingency

  • ds · 1 year ago
Where does Hume talk about contingency? I think contingency is one of the most fascinating questions about human lives. I'm the sixth of six kids, and my mom had something like 4 miscarriages before I came along (she had me at 43 because for a long time she was convinced she didn't want anything to do with children). What if my dad had decided five kids was enough, and my mom had gotten sick of getting pregnant?

Woz gave my schoolteacher mother a computer as part of "Apple in the Schools" program. It was the first computer I ever saw. I grew up and got a degree in ancient Greek. My mother wanted me to go to law school. But I had discovered the BBS Echo. Computers were even better than telephones! And girls love phones! Speed ahead, and now thanks to the Internet I have a fancy fancy job on Wall St.

I love you, Vincent Cerf and Robert Kahn. I really really love you. You too, TBL.

Moral of the story: send everyone for a liberal arts degree because the economy that exists when they go in nowadays won't be the one that's real when they get out. Learn to think and then rock on out.
